NPI Lookup

Search the National Provider Identifier registry. Find healthcare providers by NPI number, name, or location.

What is an NPI Number?

A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to healthcare providers in the United States. Required under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, all covered healthcare providers must obtain and use NPIs in standard transactions, including billing, referrals, and eligibility checks.

Our NPI lookup tool searches the NPPES (National Plan and Provider Enumeration System) database, which contains over 9 million registered providers including physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, therapists, and healthcare organizations.

Type 1 NPI: Individual

Assigned to individual healthcare providers such as physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, physical therapists, and other licensed professionals who render healthcare services.

Type 2 NPI: Organization

Assigned to healthcare organizations including hospitals, clinics, group practices, nursing facilities, home health agencies, and other entities that provide healthcare services.

How Healthcare Recruiters Use NPI Data

NPI numbers are a valuable resource for healthcare recruiters and organizations looking to verify provider credentials, confirm practice locations, and build targeted outreach lists. Here is how recruiting teams use NPI data effectively:

  • Provider Verification: Confirm that a physician or nurse holds an active NPI and verify their taxonomy (specialty) classification before outreach.
  • Location Mapping: Identify where providers practice to target recruiting efforts in specific cities or states with high demand.
  • Specialty Filtering: Use taxonomy codes to find providers in specific specialties like cardiology, family medicine, psychiatry, or emergency medicine.
  • Credential Confirmation: Cross-reference NPI records with state licensing databases to confirm active credentials before extending offers.
  • Market Analysis: Analyze provider density by location to identify underserved areas where new hires are most needed.
